Newcomer Information Centre (NIC) Group Facilitator
Time Commitment | Minimum three-month time commitment. Program sessions run online on Thursdays from 3:30 pm-5:00 pm. Volunteers are required to attend the scheduled sessions, with the option of volunteering extra hours outside program time. |

Program Description
The YMCA Newcomer Information Centre (NIC) provides its services to newcomers, so they can receive relevant settlement information and referrals through one-on-one or group sessions. Volunteers partner with staff to help newcomers broaden their knowledge on Canadian life and practice English communication skills.
Major Duties
Major Duties May Include:
- Providing enhanced support in conducting English conversational groups.
- Supporting in stimulating newcomers’ confidence in their self-expression in English.
- Providing opportunities to enhance newcomers’ knowledge of Canadian Society and way of life to impact lives positively.
- Helping in the facilitation and preparation of the materials for group sessions.
Qualifications
- Minimum age 18 years old.
- Successful applicants to this role will need to provide a Vulnerable Sector Screening from their local police service before their first day of volunteering and every three years on the anniversary of their first day of volunteering.
- Team player and active listener.
- Creativity, planning and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work in a face-paced environment.
- Punctual and responsible.
- Knowledge of Microsoft office and internet use.
- Sensitivity in dealing with participants from a variety of cultural and racial backgrounds.
- Education in linguistics, teaching methodology or in any related discipline an asset.
- Virtual volunteers must have access to internet and a computer with audio and video capabilities.
