Description
The Bronze Star Junior Lifeguard Academy combines lifesaving certification with swimming skill development, fitness training, and leadership activities. Participants improve swimming proficiency, refine stroke mechanics, build endurance, and develop self-rescue and lifesaving skills through in-water and dryland training.
The program introduces basic first aid, teamwork, and personal fitness while encouraging confidence, responsibility, and personal-best achievement. It is an excellent preparation for Bronze Medallion and a fun introduction to lifesaving sport.
Minimum swimming requirement: Swim 400 metres using a mix of front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke.
Supervision: Children 9 and under must be accompanied by an adult over the age of 16 years.
Location
The Oshawa Y is a family-friendly centre offering child care, health and fitness services, and community programming. Camp programs are available during school breaks throughout the year. On-site parking is available free for members.

CANCELLATION POLICY:To withdraw a participant from a program, you can do so by accessing the participant’s Registration History via your MY Y Account through MyY.YMCAGTA.ORG or by submitting your request to withdraw by email to memberservices@YMCAGTA.ORG
Participants who withdraw from the course more than 7 days prior to the start of the course will receive a full refund. Participants who withdraw from the course less than 7 days prior to the start of the course will receive a refund less 50% of the course fee. No refunds will be granted once the course has started.
CHANGE TO MEMBERSHIP:
If you cancel your paid monthly or yearly membership, your program registration fee may be subject to adjustment based on the rates applicable to your new membership status.
PROGRAM CANCELLATIONS:
At the YMCA, we are committed to providing a consistent and high-quality experience for all participants. However, there may be occasions where programs need to be cancelled.
If a program is cancelled due to reasons within the YMCA’s control—such as facility maintenance, staff availability, or scheduling conflicts—a credit will be automatically applied to your account for future use.
Please note that no credits or refunds will be issued for program cancellations resulting from events outside of the YMCA’s control. These include, but are not limited to, severe weather, power outages, or other unforeseen emergencies that impact program delivery.
