When Ahibba came to Canada in 2013, she needed support integrating and engaging with her new community. When she joined the Y’s Newcomer Youth Leadership Development (NYLD) program, she found the help she needed — and a whole lot more.
“I could never have imagined how much the YMCA would mean to me,” Ahibba says. “Right away, I felt like I belonged. I loved the program that first year, learning about the YMCA, how they help so many people across the city, and how all the programs are built on Y values: caring, health, honesty, Inclusion, respect and responsibility.”
You can read Ahibba’s story, and find out more about how the NYLD program benefits immigrant youth, in our new report: Research Insights: Impact in Action. With the release of this report, we can share with you — for the first time — some of NYLD’s incredible successes:
- 93% of youth who have taken part in NYLD made a new friend through the program
- 85% of participants increased their teamwork and leaderships skills
- 93% of participants reported feeling more connected to their communities after participating in the NYLD program
