The past year has been a busy time at YMCA Cedar Glen Outdoor Centre and there is lots of exciting news for 2017!
Last year, a greenhouse to support our Organic Farm was built with repurposed glass from a squash court at a YMCA Health & Fitness Centre. It is heated by wood sustainably harvested onsite at Cedar Glen.
Our partners, 4Rs Youth Movement and the Gen7 Aboriginal Role Model Program, built a Wiigiwaam on site under the guidance of Gerard Sagassige, an Elder from Curve Lake First Nations. Through our partnerships, a Wiigiwaam Reconciliation Program is being created, with the support of KAIROS, which will be offered in spring 2017.
Volunteer groups donated their time and much more in support of the YMCA. Thank you to GE, Telus, BMO, Intact, Tangerine, Mercer and Samsung for their hard work expanding our mountain bike trails, building picnic tables, renovating the sugar shack, building an outdoor amphitheatre, working on the farm, and much, much more.
Here’s a preview of what groups can look forward to on their next visit:
- Renovations to the overnight accommodations in Cedarview and Glenview Lodges are complete. Improvements include new carpet, showers, desks, lighting, armchairs, mirrors, heaters, and bunkbeds, with everything laid out in an open-concept approach that allows more space for relaxing and recharging before heading back outside.
- New day camp programs for this summer include Junior Farm Camp, Global Village Camp and Farm to Table Camp. Several new bus routes have also been added, so that even more people can access our unique day camp programs.
- Our farm stand will be at West End YMCA and Cooper Koo Family YMCA for 10 consecutive weeks this summer, selling harvest shares and organic produce grown onsite at Cedar Glen.
YMCA Cedar Glen Outdoor Centre is open year-round, and hosts a wide range of programs. Check out our website to learn more, and book your next (or first!) visit to our amazing facility.
